ipto vs ipify / geo.ipify.org
api.ipify.org is the internet's go-to "what's my IP" endpoint — deliberately minimal, unlimited, and returning nothing but the address itself. Their separate geo.ipify.org product adds country, city, and timezone, but stays just as minimal on the security side: no VPN, Tor, or abuse data at all.
| Feature | ipto | ipify / geo.ipify.org |
|---|---|---|
| Bare IP-only endpoint | No (always returns full intelligence) | Yes, api.ipify.org — by design |
| Geolocation fields | Country + city/state/lat-lon | Country, region, city, postal, lat/lon, timezone |
| ASN / ISP data | Yes | Not on the geo product |
| VPN / Tor / abuse detection | Yes, all three | None |
| Rate limit (IP-only endpoint) | n/a | Unlimited, by design |
| Community SDKs | None yet | 20+ community libraries, 2 official |
| User-Agent / device parsing | Yes — GET /v1/ua, browser/OS/device/bot detection, also on the account dashboard | No |
When ipify / geo.ipify.org might fit better
- All you actually need is the bare IP address — api.ipify.org is the simplest possible tool for exactly that, and it's genuinely excellent at it.
- You want one of the many community-maintained client libraries already built for the IP-only endpoint.
When ipto fits better
- You need ASN, ISP, or any threat signal alongside the address — ipify's core product deliberately omits all of it, and the separate geo product has no security layer either.
- You want one response with geolocation and threat data together, instead of stitching together ipify's separate IP and geo products.
FAQ
Is ipify the same company as geo.ipify.org?
They're sibling products under the same brand — api.ipify.org for a bare IP address, geo.ipify.org as a separate, more featured geolocation API. Neither includes VPN, Tor, or abuse detection.
Why would I need more than my IP address?
If you're just confirming your own outbound IP, you don't. If you're evaluating a visitor or API caller, you usually want ASN and threat context too — that's what ipto returns in the same call.
