Phone Number Checker

Validate a phone number's format and detect its region and line type — via a self-hosted parser, not a live carrier lookup. No external phone-validation vendor is called.

Enter a phone number above and press Check.

Part of ipto's Identity Intelligence surface, alongside email validation and User-Agent parsing. This tool does not return a carrier field — a phone number doesn't encode which network it's currently on, since numbers port between carriers. See GET /v1/carriers for a country-level network-operator reference instead.

What gets checked

Valid
Matches a valid numbering-plan pattern for its region.
Region
The country/region the number belongs to, per its calling code and format.
Line type
Fixed line, mobile, VoIP, toll-free, premium-rate, or similar — many numbering plans (including North America's) can't distinguish fixed from mobile from the number alone.

FAQ

No. This validates format and region only — it has no access to subscriber/owner information for any number.
A phone number itself doesn't encode its current carrier — only a SIM's IMSI does, and numbers port between carriers constantly. A real answer requires a live, paid HLR/porting-database lookup, which this tool deliberately doesn't call.
Yes — include the country code (e.g. +44 for the UK) for best results, or the tool will attempt to infer the region from the format.
Yes, through the premium layer: when budget allows, the same lookup adds the live carrier, original carrier, and whether the number has been ported. Free includes 100 premium lookups per IP address each month; when they run out you automatically keep getting the free format/region/line-type result. See pricing.

About this tool

The phone number checker validates the format of a number and returns its region and line type, such as mobile or fixed line. Enter the number in international format, or choose a country to interpret a local number.

How it works

Parsing is performed by a self-hosted library, so numbers are not forwarded to an outside phone-validation vendor. The output is based on numbering-plan rules, which is why the result comes back immediately.

What to keep in mind

There is no live carrier lookup: the tool cannot tell you whether a number is currently active, who owns it or which operator it was ported to. Validity here means "plausible according to numbering rules".

Common uses

Use it to normalize phone numbers to a consistent international format, reject obviously malformed input at the form, and flag line types that do not fit a use case, for instance a fixed line supplied for SMS verification.
