ipto vs MaxMind

MaxMind has sold IP geolocation since 2002, and its GeoLite2/GeoIP2 databases are the de facto standard several other providers build on top of. The free tier is GeoLite2 — downloadable databases you query yourself, with no live hosted API and no VPN/proxy detection. The hosted web services (GeoIP2 Precision Insights, Anonymous IP) are billed per query with no free allowance.

FAQ

The GeoLite2 databases are free to download and self-host, but there is no free hosted API call and no free VPN/proxy detection — both are paid, billed per query. ipto's hosted API, including threat data, is free with no download or self-hosting required.
A self-hosted MMDB lookup has effectively zero network latency since there's no API round-trip — genuinely useful at very high query volumes where you control the infrastructure. The tradeoff is you're responsible for downloading and applying updates yourself.
